How to write a book

By January 12th, 2023No Comments

I am writing a new book. This will be my third one. Hodder & Stoughton found me via this website and asked me to write my first book.

The new book is about the art of copywriting. I became a professional copywriter in an agency when I was 26 years old and I have been writing marketing words ever since (over three million, so far).

Writing a book is a challenge. Just like you, I am busy. In my case, I have a family, my own business and a house and garden to look after, amongst other things.

Writing can always wait, can’t it? You have probably been told that blogging is good for your business and yet do you blog regularly?

Subject experts know that writing a book is one of the most powerful things that they can do; however, the book never seems to materialise for many people.

The most important thing is to get started. You can begin by jotting down some alternative titles for your book. Then write down 10 chapter headings. This gives you something to think about.

The next step is to write a few paragraphs for the first chapter. Do the same thing the next day.

If you are super busy, write one sentence. Could you do that?

In order to get the writing done, I get up a little earlier in the morning and spend some time writing. It is surprising how the manuscript seems to write itself. This is probably to do with my subconscious, which never sleeps.

I keep the manuscript in Google Drive so that I can access it from different devices.

When I am delivering copywriting workshops I tell the attendees to ‘just write’ and not to try and edit and write at the same time. If you try and do both things simultaneously, your writing speed will suffer and so will you.

Every writer and author that I know reads widely. If you do the same, it will help to expand your vocabulary so that you can select just the right word for the thought that you want to convey.

Above all, don’t give up. The more you write, the better you will become.

What is more, whilst you are writing, ideas for new books, blogs and articles will come to you.
