Claude Cowork is Anthropic’s agentic AI tool. It sits inside the Claude desktop app, alongside Chat and Code.
Where Chat answers questions or conducts searches, Cowork completes tasks. You describe an outcome. Claude plans the steps, works on your files and applications and delivers a finished result.
What does Claude Cowork do?
Cowork has direct access to your computer’s local files and folders. It can read documents, write new ones, edit spreadsheets, build slide decks and move between applications on your machine. It also connects to tools such as Google Drive, Gmail, Microsoft 365, Hubspot and Google Calendar.
It uses the same agent architecture as Claude Code, the developer tool. However it does so without the terminal. No technical background is needed.
Typical tasks include:
- Sorting and renaming a messy folder of files
- Pulling data from receipts or PDFs into a spreadsheet
- Drafting a report from a set of source documents
- Producing a weekly metrics summary on a schedule
- Synthesising notes into a first-draft briefing
How it works in day to day business life
You can point Cowork at a folder or task. It proposes a plan. You approve or adjust. It then executes, often over a longer running session and updates you as it goes. You review the deliverable at the end.
Scheduled tasks let you set work to run automatically. A Friday report. A daily inbox scan. You decide what you want it to do.
Availability
Cowork launched in research preview in January 2026. It is available on paid plans. You need the Claude desktop app, with mobile pairing available so that you can send tasks from your phone.
Why does it matter?
Most AI tools answer prompts. Cowork delivers outcomes. The shift is from ‘show me how’ to ‘get it done’, which makes it useful for the repetitive work that eats into your time.
