Why audio mode in ChatGPT improves productivity

What audio mode is

Audio mode allows you to speak directly to ChatGPT rather than type. The conversation happens in real time. You talk and the AI responds with a voice reply. This feature works in the browser version of the AI and also inside the ChatGPT mobile app. Download the ChatGPT app to your phone or tablet and enable audio mode.

Using the app means that you can walk around and talk to the AI whilst you are doing other things. I know a number of successful people who spend an hour a day or more talking to an AI whilst they’re on the move. The microphone and voice interface are built for quick interaction. It feels more like a conversation, than a search query.

Speaking is faster than typing

People typically type between 40 and 60 words per minute, although some are slower. Natural speech can be between 120 and 150 words per minute. A spoken conversation with an AI can contain far more detail than a typed one.

The difference matters when asking complex questions, or when you want to think through an important objective or problem. A spoken request allows you to add context, examples and follow-up ideas without slowing down.

Audio mode removes friction. There is no keyboard and no formatting to worry about.

A more natural way to think

Speaking can change the way you organise your thoughts. Ideas can flow more freely in conversation. This makes audio mode useful for creative thinking, planning and problem solving.

Many users find that talking to an AI is similar to explaining an idea to a colleague (although admittedly you don’t have body language / non-verbal clues). The act of speaking helps to clarify your thinking.

Audio mode can also support creative work. It is easier to explore new ideas quickly when you can think out loud.

Useful in everyday situations

Audio mode works well when you can’t type, for example when you are walking or travelling.

Beyond speed

The deeper benefit is interaction. Audio creates a conversational rhythm. Questions and answers become fluid. This encourages deeper exploration of the issue at hand. For many people, the result is enhanced productivity, new ideas and new perspectives.

Incidentally, the AI can quickly lookup things for you and the conversation can branch into new areas which may benefit from a new, separate conversation with the AI.

Talking to yourself

Of course, there is the issue of talking to yourself and what other people may think of you. However, we are used to seeing people walking about outside or in the office, seemingly talking to themselves. We know that they are wearing an earpiece and that they are talking to someone on their phone. How could you tell if they are in fact talking to an AI?
